Growing up, again

Standard

It’s August 1994 – check-in weekend for all freshmen at George Washington University. My Mom and Dad hug me, wish me good luck and walk out of my dorm room. My first immediate thought is “partyyyy!” The very next – “holy shit, I’m on my own..”

A lot of the same feelings hit me when I started FastenSoft – “freedom!” and “I’m finally my own boss!”, followed by “wait, what do I do first?” and “holy shit, I’m on my own!” It’s overwhelming and life-lifting all at once. Almost like eating a big chunk of wasabi.

So you read and plan and try a few things. Most of the time you wind up going down dead ends, creating little piles of confusion and clutter in your brain. But with each failure you learn a new trick, break new ground and push some old piles aside in search of daylight. And then one day you approach the problem from a new angle … butterflies … you’ve got it.

It’s all part of the process. Don’t be scared to fail. If this were going to be easy you would have started your first company in daycare and been retired by kindergarten.

Like my friend and mentor Joe Marchese told me once, “fail fast, fail cheap, win big!”

Hugs and best wishes to all of you strapping entrepreneurs out there. It will all be worth it.
